English Language and Academic Skills Sessional Tutor
Bournemouth University International College Fixed term contract February - August 2023
We are looking to a recruit an English Language and Academic Skills Sessional Tutor at Bournemouth University International College to ensure the effective delivery and continued development of the College’s English Language and Academic Skills related modules and provide direct support for English Language and Skills Coordinator.
Established in 2013 and operated in partnership with Bournemouth University (BU), the college offers programmes designed to prepare international students for entry to BU. The College building is placed in Bournemouth (Lansdowne), and co-located with student residence and restaurant on BU’s Lansdowne campus.
Main responsibilities and functions
As English Language and Academic Skills Sessional Tutor, you will report to the English Language and Skills Coordinator.
The primary role of the post holder is to support English Language and Skills Coordinator with their duties as well as design and deliver highly effective modules in English Language and Academic Skills-related disciplines to international students on programmes offered by the college.
This post will be of particular interest to candidates who enjoy working with, and supporting the needs of, international students.
Responsibilities will cover these areas:
Delivering modules in English Language and Academic Skills-related subjects to students at Bournemouth University International College.- Assisting with the development and evaluation of relevant modules
- Coordinating a designated number of modules which will include creating and updating module handbooks and updating module-related information on the VLE, Share Point and on line.
- Preparing module examinations and other forms of formative and summative assessment, marking and providing feedback to students
- Ensuring that Academic Standards and Quality Assurance are maintained in the development, provision, delivery and assessment of all modules
- Assisting with the development and maintenance of the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE)
- Maintaining an accurate and up-to-date record of student attendance and performance
- Reporting on student performance
- Assisting with the production of reports for students studying relevant modules
- Providing academic learning support to students through the tutorial system
- Participating in regular meetings with teaching and support staff and representing the college at appropriate events and meetings
- Supporting the English Language and Skills Coordinator in the planning, organising and provision of PE and PSE programmes and assessments
- Any other duties as required by the College Director, Director of Studies or Programme Leader
About You
As the successful candidate, you will be dynamic, customer-orientated and performance-driven, and enjoy working with international students. In addition you will have these essential attributes:
- A Bachelor’s degree in a related subject area
- A DELTA qualification and a minimum of 2 years’ experience in teaching English as a foreign language or a CELTA qualification and more extensive experience of teaching international students
- A demonstrable understanding of the particular needs of international students
- Competent IT skills (Microsoft Office etc.)
- Strong record-keeping skills
- The ability to design and develop teaching and assessment materials in the context of the wider curriculum
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Flexibility and a willingness to work to deadlines under pressure
- Enthusiasm and motivation to be a performance-driven team player
The following attributes are also desirable:
A Master’s degree- An understanding of UK further and higher education
- Experience of quality assurance in an educational context
- Experience of working with a Virtual Learning Environment
