WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
As a Design Engineer within the Survivability domain, you will be working within a growing team of multi-skilled engineers and specialists, helping to develop, test, field and support survivability solutions. In response to both internal and customer requirements you will be a key part of the design team which will providing leading edge engineering solutions appropriate for deployment on a range of armoured vehicles operating in the land environment.
The Survivability Group defines, upgrades and generates new design solutions for armoured vehicle protection requirements for all RBSL platforms and projects. It covers a wide spectrum from conventional passive armour systems to areas such as the latest active protection developments, fire suppression and laser warning capabilities. This is a fantastic opportunity to work and develop as part of the team in the fast-paced, cutting edge domain where your output will help support the UK Army and develop RBSL’s survivability capability and expertise.

Due to the nature of the work and the need to be close to the Survivability team and manufacturing facilities the role would be primariliy based at RBSL Telford, with limited opportunity for home working.
Position Duties and Responsibilities
This is a demanding role, within the Survivability design team, which requires close liaison between other engineering teams, functions, subsystem suppliers and the customer.
Significant drive and energy, strong engineering and drafting skills, and the ability to deliver a diverse range of tasks to demanding time, target cost and quality requirements are essential attributes to succeed.
The candidate must be both a team player who is prepared to work with a multi-site engineering team within RBSL and the customer community.
The candidate will be a key member of the in-house Survivability design team, undertaking the design tasks associated with the development of specific system / equipment, including:
- Generation of design specifications and / or design schemes; including CAD models, assemblies and drafting 2D drawings for concept and detail designs of mechanical systems.
- Working with the wider Survivability team to turn ideas and concepts into workable, manufacturable designs for prototyping and integration.
- Provide calculations as required to justify a proposed course of action such as tolerance analysis and stress calculations to support concept and detail design.
- Producing engineering solutions and technical data packs to RBSL company standards to satisfy the technical requirements of a contract.
- Produce specifications and designs, which simultaneously fulfil the contractual requirements and contribute to cost-effective design.
- Working with other teams such as Operations, particularly during the prototype phase to ensure that improvements, changes and feedback are incorporated into the maturing designs
- Liaison with suppliers to ensure compliance with technical requirements and quality standards.
- Ensure that designs produced consider the following in conjunction with other Subject Matter Experts:
- Product Design safety
- Design for manufacture, assembly, dis-assembly and end of life processing
- Design to cost
- Design for reliability and maintainability
- Conducting all activities in a professional manner and delivering mechanical design solutions to agreed time, cost and quality to meet project or business milestones.
