Job Description
Successful applicant must have at least 2 years experience as an Operations Manager with manufacturing background and manufacturing of a bespoke product.
We are looking for an experienced Operations Manager who has worked in product processing or manufacturing and still has hands on experience, who is looking to be an Operations Director within the next 12-18 months.
1. JOB PURPOSE:
The senior person in the operational area of the business including QHSE, manufacturing, planning, transport and maintenance. The primary purpose of the role is to take full responsibility for the operational profit and loss element of the business and to plan, organize and effectively utilise company resources i.e. Materials, machines and people to manufacture processed glass products efficiently and effectively and to the required quality standard.
We are looking for someone who invests time in all Operations staff, actively participates in and recognises the value of the Culture Club and cultural improvement initiatives and makes training and development a cornerstone of our operations plans.
Ensure that all Company standards, targets and objectives are achieved regarding safety, quality, productivity, on time delivery, staff morale and environmental safeguards. It is expected that at some point this role could be elevated to Operations Director when the incumbent has demonstrated sufficient capability. May also be required to represent the business from time to time. Will also be required to liaise with all other departments in the business and to create and foster a positive team spirit. Holds the final decision-making authority for the operational side of the business.
2. DIMENSIONS:
- Directing and planning the activity of up to 150 direct operatives across all production shifts through QHSE, Production, Planning, loading, maintenance, CIP and ancillary services. Also providing the link between operations and all other parts of the business. Planning horizon to be in the 2-5 year range.
- Annual Turnover up to £30M.
3. PRINCIPLE ACCOUNTABILITIES:
An investor in their people, the successful applicant will put their people first. This person will spend time 1:1 with their staff when needed, ensure that members of the team are made available to complete training, attend extra activity such as culture club meetings and support all culture improvement activity
i) Report at board level on the operational performance of the business and participate in strategy sessions which may be convened from time to time
ii) Direct and support the QHSE, planning, production, transport, CIP and maintenance teams to achieve their KPI’s in order to ensure profit is maximised for the business
iii) data provided by others relating to product quality and Quality Management Systems in order to support and direct the Production Management (PM) teams in minimising all elements of internal and external wastage.
iv) Ensure that the relevant teams maintain internal testing and recording requirements for BSI and other regulatory bodies.
v) Ensure every customer is treated as a QC customer and all standards are achieved to ensure KPI targets are achieved and have a best of the best mentality on quality
vi) Utilise the data and reports provided by others e.g. Internal Benchmarking and Down Time Analysis in order to identify potential areas for improvement.
vii) Liaise with all departments to maximise output from all processes and seek to achieve all KPI’s particularly on time delivery (DOT)
viii) Support the Production and CIP teams in reviewing the production planning process to organise workload and ensure that targets are achieved, and each process runs efficiently e.g. machines are run at optimum speed whilst maintaining quality. Streamline movement of materials between processes and through to despatch.
ix) Work with the Health & Safety Manager & Production team to ensure that a clean and safe working environment is maintained, safe work practices (especially wearing of PPE) are maintained and equipment is operated correctly and safely.
x) Receive and review Accident Investigation reports as and when required.
xi) Conduct regular reviews with the Production Management Senior team to ensure effective utilisation of staff, encourage team working and sharing of ‘best practice’ across all production units and all factories
xii) Review Production Management team skills at all levels to identify training opportunities/requirements and implement team training plan. Aim to develop PM staff to give job enrichment, encourage flexibility and develop multi-skilling to ensure adequate cover during holiday/absence/training periods.
xiii) Work with the maintenance management team and monitor performance e.g. plant breakdown frequency and ensure that all scanning is done correctly. Review with maintenance and the senior production management team to formulate plans which will increase uptime.
xiv) Analyse production data e.g. productivity, throughput/output etc. in order to identify opportunities to improve through reorganization of people, processes and/or machines.
xv) Build positive relationships with external stakeholders such as customers and suppliers and promote the external image of ESG
xvi) Use Operations to create a competitive advantage for ESG which will allow EBITDA growth
xvii) Take a forward-looking view of the future growth and other potential improvements for the business areas under your control. Take responsibility for creating new initiatives around new technology and ways of working to give the business a competitive advantage. Also identify any potential threats to the business and take mitigating actions
4. OBJECTIVES
- Training and development of operations staff.
- Assist the SMT in achieving goals by focusing on operational performance including all production and transport costs and targets which will be agreed with the business from time to time
- Achieve industry leading On Time Delivery performance in excess of 99%
- Use plant assessment methodology to drive overall business performance
- External Waste no greater than 0.70%
- Internal Waste no greater than 2.00%
- Achieving specific productivity targets across all processes and production units.
- Monitor direct & indirect labour costs and take action to ensure they remain within budget.
- Aim to minimise all accidents and achieve zero LTA’s for the year
- Ensure the company remains legal and compliant in all areas including transport and QHSE
5. DECISION MAKING AUTHORITY & CONTROLS
i) Makes own decisions within agreed expenditure limits to achieve business objectives. Health and Safety of employees remains a prime business objective and therefore will never be compromised.
ii) Has authority to take disciplinary action up to and including dismissal at agreed levels of seniority. Any issues outside of the agreed levels will be by discussion and agreement at a senior level. May also act as an independent authority in terms of appeals in the disciplinary process
6. KEY SKILLS & PERSONAL FACTORS
Able to motivate and lead diverse teams in the achievement of operational business objectives and be prepared to make the right decisions at the right times.
Experienced in planning and organizing their own time and that of their teams. Able to adapt to changing circumstances.
Able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with internal and external customers and suppliers.
May be required to deputise for the Managing Director from time to time
