What it's like to work here:The South Lakes portfolio looks after all the National Trust land and property on the western shore of Windermere around Sawrey, Hawkshead, Coniston and Little Langdale. Your main places of work will be at the gothic revival Wray Castle in Low Wray, with occasional cover at Hill Top house and garden in Near Sawrey, and the Beatrix Potter Gallery in Hawkshead.
Wray Castle is one of the most spectacular and ambitious villa estates in the Lake District. Created between 1840 and 1860 from open farmland, the estate includes a house in the Gothic form of a medieval castle, a church, a farm and boathouses set in rolling lakeshore parkland.
Hill Top draws visitors from around the world who are passionate about Beatrix Potter, and often have emotional and nostalgic associations with the author and her stories. Through the season the garden comes into bloom and the landscape changes – there is always something new to talk about with visitors.
The Beatrix Potter Gallery is housed in the building that was the office of William Heelis, the husband of Beatrix Potter. William was the senior partner at W.H. Heelis & Son solicitors. The firm advised Beatrix Potter on her purchases of land and farms, so she came here often to consult on the management of her estate. Here we display Beatrix Potter’s original illustrations.
