We require a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist for a Band 6 position in Cellular Pathology to join our bank team. This would suit a BMS with several years’ experience in histopathology who has the IBMS Specialist Portfolio.
An experienced Biomedical Scientist who is nearing completion of their Specialist Portfolio would be considered for a Band 5 position within the department, although automatic progression to a Band 6 upon completion of the Specialist Portfolio cannot be guaranteed.
WHO WE ARE:
The department receives over 30,000 specimens per year and undertakes all routine histological procedures including specimen dissection, microtomy, frozen sections, special stains and immunocytochemistry. We are UKAS accredited and registered with the IBMS as a pre and post registration training laboratory.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:
You will work as a Specialist Biomedical Scientist in the Cellular Pathology Department and report to the Cellular Pathology Manager.
We are looking for someone who can work comfortably within a team but also with the skills and confidence to work independently. The post will involve taking a leading role in all aspects of the daily work in the histopathology department, including immunocytochemistry, special stains, microtomy, embedding and specimen dissection. The role will also include assisting with the supervision and training of junior staff. Excellent communication skills both face to face and on the telephone are required. You should be able to work accurately and efficiently demonstrating good organisational skills. The role will be diverse reflecting the nature of the busy Cellular Pathology Department.

1.The preparation of surgical specimens for histological examination including:
: Reception and organisation of patient samples
: Specimen Dissection
: Processing and embedding of patient tissue blocks
: Microtomy and staining of paraffin wax embedded tissues
: Quality control microscopy checks
2.The investigation and execution of special techniques as required and active participation in the development and validation/verification of new techniques. Ensuring reagent management documentation is maintained.
3.Participation in the immunocytochemisty service including review of stained slides, fault finding and liaising with senior staff concerning appropriate corrective action.
4.Performimg frozen sections as required
5.Participate in internal and external quality assurance programmes as appropriate.
6.Supports the ongoing maintenance of the department quality management system by writing, reviewing and updating SOPs, undertaking regular audits and reporting any non-conformities or other incidents which may arise.
7.Assist in general laboratory duties as required including dealing with telephone enquiries
8.Supports Consultant Histopathologists, acting as first contact point for them for any queries/ work-related issues which may arise.
11.Assist other senior staff in supervision and training of appropriate staff including trainee staff other BMS grades and visitors to the department.
12.Such other duties as may be reasonably required by the Laboratory Manager.
The jobholder is expected to undertake training and competency assessments in order to demonstrate evidence of continuing professional development and continuing competence in histology techniques.
It is essential that a high standard of dress and conduct be maintained to the satisfaction of the Laboratory Manager.
