Job Description
We are looking for enthusiastic people who are interested in Phlebotomy to join our busy, friendly teams across Mid and South Essex University Hospitals group, initially these roles will be in the Mid Essex region.
The roles are vital to the smooth running of the Pathology service across the region. The main duties of the roles is collection of blood samples by Venepuncture and Capillary methods from patients at various locations across the group and to assist with stock control and ordering of the supplies from Pathology stores when necessary.
A clean, methodical and tidy approach to work is important. Shifts will be offered over a 7 day working pattern.
'In-house' training will be given, so no previous experience is necessary. However, it will be advantageous to have worked in a health care environment previously, especially dealing with patients. - Collection of blood samples by Venepuncture and Capillary methods
from patients on wards, those referred from out patient’s clinics and
General Practitioners.
- To participate in the provision of Phlebotomy services across the Trust.
- Assist with stock control and ordering of the supplies when necessary.

- To provide an efficient professional service, sensitive to patient’s needs.
- To communicate the testing procedure, putting all involved at ease.
- Ensure patients are treated safely and courteously, causing the minimum of distress or discomfort throughout the blood sampling procedure
- To communicate with patients, parents, carers and children and a caring manner
- Dispatch of correct quality samples to the laboratory within agreed time scale.
- Work records and statistics are accurately maintained.
- To make suitable decisions when working alone.
- To maintain phlebotomy supplies ensuring work stations are fully stocked and assist in distribution of blood collection materials to wards and departments when required.
- To be able to work unsupervised and as part of a team.
To communicate with other healthcare professionals in the course of your duties.
- To attend meetings and training course as required.
To be able to handle appropriately and with discretion patients who become unwell or distressed.
- To be able to handle patients with severe illness or disability. To be able to cope with stress and pressure.
- To comply with health and safety regulations.
- To comply with Infection Control policies relating to handling sharps and infectious biological fluids. To ensure patient confidentiality and conformance to the Data Protection act.
- To adhere to department Standard Operating policies.
- To be aware of and adhere to Trust policies and the Staff Charter
Follow strict uniform & hand hygiene policy in all areas at all times.
- To undertake any other duties commensurate with the post.
To be flexible and provide cover for colleagues as experience and training allows.
- To promote and maintain a professional, courteous and positive image of the Pathology Department.
