This is an excellent apprenticeship opportunity in Dstl for a Software Engineer to work within Platform Systems Division.

The Platform Systems Division (PLSD) supports the Ministry of Defence and wider Government to ensure intelligent decision-making is at the heart of the UK Defence and Security. We draw on expertise and innovation from industry, academia and international partners to develop and provide a broad range of impartial evidence-based analysis and human science advice. This enables us to support high priority decision-making on critical policies and to evaluate exciting new defence and security capabilities. Job description

What will you be doing?
As a Software Engineering Apprentice you will provide expertise to the group and over time will lead on the development of innovative software and simulation models for the future. As well as building this next generation software, you will have the responsibility, working with industry, to maintain and improve our existing models to keep them up to date with real world technical developments in autonomy, Artificial Intelligence, sensors and weapons systems. We are seeking apprentices with a strong interest in software to help us:

  • Develop and use software models using modern languages and technologies
  • Apply recent advances in artificial intelligence to decision making and problem solving
  • Integrate the use of virtual reality and augmented reality technology into our software

Successful applicants will be offered the opportunity to study for a BSc (Hons) in Digital & Technology Solutions, sponsored by Dstl, on a part time basis, normally attending university 1 day / week for academic tuition, over the course of the 3 year apprenticeship. You will follow apprenticeship standard ST0119 Digital and Technology Solutions Professional (integrated degree) on the Software Engineer pathway at the University of Winchester.

Important Information

This role start September 2023. You must be 18 to work at Dstl, therefore you must turn 18 before Septmebr 2023 to apply for the apprenticeship.
Our work in defence, security and intelligence requires our employees to be UK Nationals who are able to gain a high level of security clearance to undertake the projects we are involved in to protect us from security threats. For this reason, only UK Nationals will be able to apply for this role. If you are an international or dual-national candidate, and you think you have the skills we need, please consider applying to any of our government, security or defence partners.

This role will require full UK security clearance and you should have resided in the UK for the past 5 years. For some roles Developed Vetting will also be required, in this case you should have resided in the UK for the past 10 years.

Qualifications

Applicants must hold at least 2 A levels at grade C or above and 5 GCSE’s (or equivalent) as grade 4/C or above, which must include Maths, English and at least one Science.
