Job IntroductionWe’re looking for somebody with an in-depth understanding of public health and primary care, and experience of working in complex health and care systems, to join our strong and resilient shared Public Health Service.
The Public Health Service works to improve health and reduce inequalities across the three unitary authorities of Milton Keynes, Bedford Borough and Central Bedfordshire.
As the Public Health Principal, you’ll be responsible for the public health primary care function based in Milton Keynes City Council, reporting to and working closely with the Deputy Director of Public Health.
Although this role is on a full-time basis (37 hours), we’re able to consider applications for job share or reduced hours. Interviews will take place the week beginning 27 March.

Role ResponsibilitiesAs the public health primary care lead, the post holder will:
- Develop and influence strategic approaches to primary and secondary prevention in primary care services (GP, community pharmacy, dental and ophthalmology), working closely with the Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes Integrated Care Board (ICB)
- Work with Primary Care Networks (PCNs) to influence targeted work to address health inequalities and provide strategic leadership and oversight of Public Health commissioned services and associated budgets including NHS Health Checks
- Manage staff in the public health primary care team
Ideal CandidateThe post holder will be a senior member of the public health team. The ideal candidate will:
- Have an in-depth understanding of public health, primary care, and ICB priorities, as well as political awareness
- Have prior experience of working in complex health and care systems
- Have strong analytical skills and the ability to apply data and insights to inform evidence-based approaches
- Have excellent communication, negotiation and influencing skills, and be able to demonstrate they are able to work effectively across organisational boundaries
- Be expected to cope with multiple and changing demands and to meet tight deadlines
