Overview of project/role
Join a dynamic team that sits at the apex of providing both strategic guidance and practical, technical support to help accelerate London’s transition towards a more sustainable city.
This role sits within the Energy and Carbon team within the Sustainability and Corporate Environment team. The team’s activities include:
- Supporting and developing TfL’s Corporate Environment Plan; developing plans to deliver our target for net zero operations by 2030
- Tracking progress towards the 2030 goal and working across the business to improve environmental data management and reporting
- Providing subject matter expertise in the field of energy and carbon and provide advice and input to other Safety, Health and Environment teams and the business
- Working with external partners and suppliers to drive environmental improvements
- Providing leadership and acting as the client for carbon reduction initiatives, such as the procurement of renewable electricity via power purchase agreements

- Supporting development of the environmental strategy and direction across key themes and within business areas
- Supporting the implementation of plans and strategies across the business.
- Coordinating and tracking activities and progress against plans to ensure continued progress.
- Being a champion and advocate for safety, health and environment in everything you do, role modelling what it means to make safety, health, and environment personal.
- Hunger and curiosity to continually expand your knowledge, collaborate with others to solve the most challenging questions and translate ideas into practical application
Skills, Knowledge & Experience
Knowledge
- Knowledge of climate change, UK energy policy and the challenges cities face as they decarbonise (Desirable)
- Knowledge of designing and evaluating initiatives to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions (Desirable)
- Knowledge of environmental management regulations and the issues in the transport and urban planning industries in the UK and in London (Desirable)
- Good knowledge of project management principles (Desirable)
- Understanding of the political framework in which TfL operates (Desirable)
Skills
- Ability to work at pace and make things happen, both independently and collaboratively within a team and with colleagues across a large, complex organisation (Essential)
- Ability to communicate environmental concepts and solutions and to influence your key stakeholders (Essential)
- Ability to prioritise workload (Essential)
- Good written, verbal and presentation skills, alongside strong examples of collaboration and diplomacy to ensure all risks and opportunities are captured and adequately communicated to inform decision-making throughout the lifecycle of all projects, schemes and initiatives (Essential)
- Ability to analyse and interpret data to make recommendations (Desirable)
Experience
- Experience of managing a project with multiple interacting elements and complex stakeholders (Essential)
- Experience of developing interventions to reduce energy usage or carbon emissions (Desirable)
- Assisting with environmental improvement programmes, contract design, managing external consultants for specialist and technical environmental services (Desirable)
