The UCL Estates Operations team manages a property portfolio of over 645,000m2 of diverse real estate on behalf of UCL, supporting over 48,000 student and nearly 15,000 staff. Managing an in house UCL workforce of 250 staff and a contractor workforce of over 1,000, the primary function of the division is to provide all Facilities Management services including, cleaning, security and maintenance.
The Estates Direct Labour Operative (DLO) team provides a comprehensive on-call service both responding to emergencies but also undertaking works where access is a problem during normal hours. With the University becoming more commonly used out of normal study and research times, there is an increase in the number of emergencies and equipment breakdowns that the maintenance team are required to attend to.
This is an exciting opportunity to support the DLO Maintenance Operations team in helping them respond to planned and reactive tasks across the campus on a wide range of systems and services. As a Multi-skilled operative, you will be working within a small mixed trade team.
You will be expected to complete tasks in line with current health and safety requirements, statutory requirements and to a high standard. An essential part of this role will be communicating as you will be working directly with stakeholders, and term contractors to complete works and keep the University functioning.
This role is offered on a shift basis, candidates will work 4 days on, 4 off, 4 nights on, 4 off (12 hour shifts). A shift allowance of 15% will be paid in addition to the advertised salary.
Previous experience of working in maintenance operations as a Multi-skilled trade operative is essential, preferably in a higher education institution or comparable environment. You’ll be confident, organised and able to work under pressure, prioritise work tasks and be able to communicate with stakeholders as well as our own engineering staff. You will have sound literacy and numeracy skills, have a broad technical knowledge of mechanical / electrical and HVAC systems with advanced problem-solving skills. You will have an in-depth knowledge of legislation and a working knowledge of H&S.
