The Department of Geography is truly international in both its outlook and in its membership, with students and staff from over 40 countries. We have over 400 students on our undergraduate programmes, more than 180 Masters students across 9 programmes, and approximately 90 PhD candidates. Currently UCL Geography has almost 50 Academic and Teaching staff, approximately 20 postdoctoral researchers, and 24 professional services staff. The Department also hosts scholars from across the world visiting the Department to pursue their research. The variety of backgrounds, experience, ages and nationalities, as well as the vast array of resources and facilities at UCL and throughout London, ensures a rewarding, stimulating and varied student experience. The Department has a long and distinguished tradition of top-quality cross and interdisciplinary research with social scientists, climate modellers, data scientists, urbanists, environmental scientists and geoscientists all working on a huge variety of projects across the domains of Environment, Resources, Heritage and Social Science.
This is 0.4 FTE fixed term post with funding available until 31st December 2023.
Appointment at Grade 7, spine point 29 (£38,308 per annum pro rata, including London Allowance) is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Research Assistant Grade 6B, with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.
You will support and evaluate UCL’s ongoing work on the TIME4CS project, gaining an in-depth knowledge of the earlier study of state-of-the-art desk analysis and the TIME4CS knowledge base and framework. This knowledge has been “translated” in replicable actions/activities (pool of lessons learnt for the roadmaps of Implementers). The resultant framework includes clear indicators and evidence for different aspects (e.g. differentiating between formal class on citizen science, a course, or an extra-curricular training school) and that information has been used to complete the knowledge base about the state of CS adoptions at research organisations across Europe.
You will be involved in other activities in the project and at UCL Office of Open Science and Scholarship, such as developing and delivering training and and will gain considerable cross-national experience, working with different institutions across Europe, and contributing to the project’s reports and dissemination efforts.
TIME4CS (Supporting sustainable Institutional Changes to promote Citizen Science in Science and Technology) https://www.time4cs.eu/ is a three-year H2020 research and innovation project (Grant agreement 101006201), now in its 3rdyear.
The project aims at supporting and facilitating the implementation of sustainable Institutional Changes in universities and research organisations to promote Public Engagement and Citizen Science in science and technology. TIME4CS has identified 4 Intervention Areas (IAs) that alone or combined can stimulate the Institutional Changes necessary to promote Public Engagement in R&I activities: i) Research; Education and Awareness; iii) Support resources and Infrastructure; iv) Policy and Assessment. Institutional Changes should be: i) irreversible, ii) comprehensive, iii) inclusive and iv) contextualized. Bearing this in mind, TIME4CS will establish a knowledge transfer and mutual learning programme between Front-Runners (FRs) and Implementers (Is). The first ones are RPOs with a comprehensive expertise in Citizen Science and that have already undergone Institutional Changes. The latter are TIME4CS beneficiaries still in the early stages of the implementation of Institutional Changes to support Citizen Science, willing to face the challenge of introducing CS activities in their structures. The mutual learning programme will lead to the development of specific and tailored roadmaps for each implementing organisation inclyding a set of specific and detailed actions to follow (Grounding Actions). The whole process will be supported by two facilitator partners supporting the knowledge transfer and the definition of the Grounding Actions.
TIME4CS involves a consortium integrating 11 partners from across Europe. At UCL, the project is led by Prof Muki Haklay who co-directs the interdisciplinary Extreme Citizen Science (ExCiteS). The researcher will be based in ExCites – which is an interdisciplinary initiative to push the boundaries of citizen science to explore how we use and understand the world around us.
If you have any queries regarding the vacancy, please contact Professor Muki Haklay: [email protected].
You will be educated to degree level MSc in Science Technology Studies, Conservation, Psychology, Geography, Science communication or related social sciences subject or equivalent business experience, with knowledge and understanding of qualitative research methods and citizen science.
You should have a high degree of computer literacy, in particular word processing, social media and data analysis tools (spreadsheets, R Stats, and the like) and hold confident presentation skills; in presenting technical and conceptual subjects to a wide and varied audience.
Experience in conducting research with organisations, interest in and background knowledge on the topic of organisational transformation, experience in conducting research with organisations and Qualitative Comparative Analysis are all desirable but not essential skills for the post holder.

As London’s Global University, we know diversity fosters creativity and innovation, and we want our community to represent the diversity of the world’s talent. We are committed to equality of opportunity, to being fair and inclusive, and to being a place where we all belong. We therefore particularly encourage applications from candidates who are likely to be underrepresented in UCL’s workforce. These include people from Black, Asian and ethnic minority backgrounds; disabled people; LGBTQI+ people; and for our Grade 9 and 10 roles, women. The Department of Geography is committed to the values of equality, diversity and inclusion and we have an active Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee, and networks for BME, LGBTQ, and disabled/neurodiverse staff and students. The Department recognises the importance of family-friendly working and we try, as far as possible, to organise meetings and events with staff responsibilities as parents and carers in mind. In 2016, the Department was awarded an Athena SWAN Bronze award and recently gained the Silver award (October 2022) in recognition of our advancement of gender equality: representation, progression and success. Above all the Department aims to be a supportive environment for both its staff and students.
