Organisational Context
Founded in 2004, Global Generation grows food, people and community for a just world.
We operate in the boroughs of Camden, Islington and Southwark and work with people of all ages,
particularly children and young people.
Working from educational agroecological spaces such as the Story Garden in King’s
Cross, the Floating Garden in Islington and the Paper Garden in Canada Water, we combine
activities such as urban food growing, cooking and healthy eating with dialogue, storytelling,
creative writing, the arts, silence and stillness. These practices help us to create the
conditions for people to come together in a fuller and more connected sense of who they are and
what they are a part of and, from that space, to practically and creatively contribute to
ecological and social change.
Our green spaces are a platform to bring different people together. As Gardener, you
will work closely with the Garden Team, volunteers and programme participants to support Global
Generation’s vision.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
As Gardener at the Story Garden, your responsibilities will include:
Working independently and within a team, including practical supervision of our
Seasonal Assistant Gardener, to maintain the horticultural elements of the Story Garden and
our Garden Services work to a high standard
Undertaking horticultural tasks (following agroecological principles),
including:
Propagating, planting and harvesting Pruning, training and staking Maintaining good plant health Composting and maintaining good soil health Organic pest, disease and weed management Irrigation Maintenance and repair of raised beds
Proactively keeping the Story Garden clean, tidy and functional
Working in a manner that ensures your safety and the safety of others at all
times
Undertaking tasks efficiently and working within set timeframes
Communicating effectively with team members, including regular record keeping and
reporting
Basic administration, including use of G-suite
Carrying out any other reasonable duties as required
Working with Garden Services team to install new gardens and help to develop new
designs and management plans
Potential to work off site with our Somers Town team, to install and maintain
growing spaces within the local community
Contributing to the vision and the development of the Story Garden, and Global
Generation
Please note, this is a physical job which requires the ability to perform manual
handling tasks and move around the site.
