Job Introduction
The BBC News website is one of the world’s largest and most popular news sites. We are looking for an enthusiastic and creative senior journalist to join our Digital Curation team, one of three core teams in our Digital Output department. You will help to produce our News Daily newsletter and Daily Briefing articles for an engaged audience. It’s a job for someone with considerable experience in digital news - equally comfortable with writing news and feature copy as with curation of content. As the recent News strategy highlighted, newsletters are key to our aim of driving daily habit among the audience
Main Responsibilities
A senior journalist in the newsletters team on Curation will be expected to write, edit, produce and send a daily newsletter for the BBC News website. The journalist is expected to comb through a wide variety of stories at speed and select a curated range of content which they will then re-write for the newsletter audience. The candidate will need to be familiar with writing UK and international news for a predominantly UK audience. An understanding of how search and social trends and audience data improve our journalism will be part of the job.
Note: This role is based at home. The successful candidate will need to do the preparation in the evening, between about 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., and then work in the morning between 4:00 a.m. and 8:45 a.m. This is part of the role that equates to 0.75 equivalent full-time, ie an average of 26.25 hours, or three shifts per week.
Are you the right candidate?
The successful candidate should have:
- Excellent editorial judgement with significant experience writing and editing breaking news in text on digital platforms to tight deadlines
- A history of using social media, search and audience analytics to improve digital storytelling, reach new audiences and drive engagement
- A track record of covering the UK and international news agenda and delivering insightful, high-quality journalism to digital audiences
- The ability to very swiftly write and sub engaging news copy for news websites, but with attention to accuracy, context and tone
- A solid appreciation of how newsletters can be used to curate content, build engagement and bring audiences back to the BBC News site
