FOR SCHOOL YEAR 2023-2024

POSITION SUMMARY

The College Advisor is an integral member of the Instructional Leadership team OCHS supporting

AMPS alumni in Oakland as they pursue their dreams of higher education. S/he will serve as the primary

point of contact for a targeted group of college aged alumni enrolled in four-year college, to stay in

touch with AMPS, stay connected with their teammates, and stay on the path to and through college.

Additionally this position is responsible for, but not limited to, providing direct assistance to OCHS

alumni who are enrolled in two-year degree programs, community colleges, vocational and technical

schools, part-time enrollees, and students with non-enrolled and unverified status. S/he will provide

retention and transfer services to ensure that all OCHS alumni work towards the completion of a

college degree program.

The College Advisor will also work with the Oakland Charter High School team to establish initiatives to

promote college persistence via matriculation workshops, summer and bridge programs, scholarships,

life skills, career and networking opportunities, enrichment opportunities and other resources available

to college students.

Requirements:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Support and Advising (50%)

  • Reach out to AMPS alumni enrolled in two and four-year college, providing advising services

focused on college persistence and completion, career readiness, academic and social

integration, and transfer options

  • Follow up with alumni by contacting them and making sure they are participating and taking

advantage of college resources and community services within their institution to ensure

success

  • Develop and utilize intervention plans and work with at-risk students to connect them with

support staff and other resources to improve academic standing

  • Identify alumni who desire or may desire to transfer to four-year post-secondary institutions;

provide information and guidance regarding university articulation agreements, transfer policies

and procedures

  • Coach students in the fundamentals of career planning and assist with placement in summer

programs and internships

  • Maintain comprehensive knowledge and information on financial aid policies and procedures

and support alumni in maintaining/improving college financial aid packages

  • Focuses on coordination of Senior class college acceptances and application process
  • Works with preparation of Juniors and Sophomores [e.g., PSAT analysis]) for placement at four-

year colleges and universities

  • Coordinates student sign-up for SAT I & II and ACT
  • Coordinates college fairs, career and college presentations
  • Updates and implements the College Advising Booklet and calendar
  • Researches and assists students with scholarships and financial aid
  • Monitors student progress (but may share responsibility based on enrollment):
  • examines and authorizes progress reports and report cards for 11th-12th grades
  • Meets with students and parents to set goals/resolve issues/motivate students/educate

parents; institutes ILPs, IEPs, SSTs and suggests further action (i.e., tutoring,

modifications, prohibition from afterschool activities, request for Special Education

Services, etc.)

  • Conducts college nights and may assist Site Director with informational nights for family

members

  • Researches internships and summer program opportunities for all students
  • Teaches College Readiness course(s); may teach 1 or more other sections based on

need/enrollment

Project Management (20%)

  • Manage and develop a comprehensive and annual retention plan for student success consistent

with the program's strategic plan

  • Organize, plan, and coordinate co-curricular initiatives including but not limited to

matriculation, life skills, and career readiness workshops; career week; college transition

workshop; graduation celebration; mentor program; job shadowing and internship program

  • Coordinate outreach campaigns, manage on-line communities; develop on-line social

networking activities, and develop and maintain multimedia content on program web sites

  • Prepare internal and external communication regarding retention program services
  • Devise a strategic intervention plan for outreaching to alumni disconnected with the OCHS

program and not enrolled in college

Relationship Management and College Partnerships (20%)

  • Conduct site visits to and develop and maintain contacts at local colleges and universities in an

effort to provide support and potential alumni clustering

  • Attend orientations, graduations, open houses, and other student functions
  • Partner with the Office of Student Affairs, Office of Academic Affairs and other key university

offices and community agencies to ensure that the services provided to AMPS alumni are well-

coordinated

  • Be a resource and liaison to both students and campus colleagues to assist in minimizing

potential obstacles which may impede degree progress

  • Identify, develop and leverage resources deemed critical to improving student retention,

persistence and success

  • Link students to other OCHS alumni nationally attending/matriculating their colleges
  • Create a College Connections Initiative and national College Partnership Initiative to effectively

support alumni in college

  • Maintain awareness of campus support services available to students, making necessary

referrals as needed

  • Coordinate educational support services (academic, financial, personal, and career- related

assistance) for students in collaboration with staff, faculty, administration, and community

agencies

Marketing, Research and Data (10%)

  • Research and stay current on higher education programs, trends, and issues with student impact

and make recommendations based on best practices and research

  • Track data (contact information, grades, financial aid packages, scholarships, etc.) for all seniors
  • Work closely with the AMPS Central and leadership team to collect and assess student data and

use this information to support persistence and retention

  • Assist in the development of an effective early alert system for at risk students; analyze attrition

and student success outcomes and take action to improve retention

  • Assist with data collection for annual reports and evaluation of program activities
  • Complete reports as assigned by the Director and Assistant Principal
  • Maintain documentation for program files and individual student records
  • Prepare marketing, publicity materials, and report writing as needed

QUALIFICATIONS

Required knowledge, skills & abilities:

  • Experience providing direct advising support and career coaching to high school and college

aged students

  • Working knowledge of current retention practice theory and research with an emphasis on

research, assessment, and data-informed decision making

  • Knowledge of California State University and University of California and California Community

College systems, EOP programs and other access programs designed to support low-income,

first generation, and students of color

  • Experience in higher education or administrative experience preferably in admission/enrollment

management and/or student services, academic and career counseling with emphasis in:

  • Working with students towards credit completion, transfer, or graduation
  • Working with students in certificate programs or vocational programs
  • Working with students with an undetermined major and setting educational goals
  • Working with a population of first generation college students
  • Experience with special populations including military enlistees, Veteran's Affairs and GI Bill

recipients, and AB540 Students

  • Possess strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills with attention to detail, and

proven leadership

  • Capacity to deliver dynamic and motivational presentations with ease and confidence
  • Ability to represent the students, families and staff of AMPS Schools well to multiple

constituencies

  • Ability to connect with people from professional backgrounds
  • Willingness to travel to school sites and student homes across Counties served by AMPS and

local and national college campuses

  • Flexibility to multi-task within an ambiguous, fast-moving, entrepreneurial environment, while

also driving toward clarity and solutions

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree required; Master's degree a plus, higher education or a related field is a plus
