Job description

We are looking for talented infrastructure Engineers to join us in the Intelligence Automation Garage (IAG) to design, build, deploy, maintain and enhance cloud-based infrastructure solutions utilising a blend of the latest techniques and technologies such as automatic image generation (PACKER), event-driven architecture, micro service architecture, serverless computing, containerisation, robotic process automation, and infrastructure-as code. This will help increase productivity and improve decision making across DWP.

As an Infrastructure Engineer you will be a skilled engineer and a role model in Infrastructure solutions. Responsible for ensuring best practices are adhered to across the department and guiding teams on how to deliver quality Infrastructure products.


You will assist in the design of Infrastructure services in collaboration with Architecture and Engineering principles. With a focus on operational stability, robustness, resilience, availability and quality you will be accountable for infrastructure solutions.


We are looking for experience in delivering highly available enterprise scale platforms in the cloud comprising of a large virtual estate combined with a database driven backend. Development, automation, deployment, operations, security and running of the live service whilst integrating with existing business cloud and legacy systems

To date, DWP's IAG have developed, deployed and scaled over 67 individual and unique automations using up to 600 robots per day and processing over 26m transactions – using a mix of technologies including Robotics Process Automation, Computer Vision, OCR, Natural Language Processing and Deep Learning. Working closely with DWP business areas and stakeholders, IAG teams design, build, deploy and run automations using our cloud platform and liquid infrastructure.

Recognized as a Government leader in Intelligent Automation, DWP is also acknowledged as leading the way across industry – confirmed by successes at National Technology Awards 2019 (Tech Team of the Year) and Digital Technology Leaders Awards 2019 (Best Automation Project). As an Infrastructure Engineer (SEO) you will deal with the day to day management and development of infrastructure products and contribute towards their design.

You will be responsible for the operational stability of the infrastructure solutions, and be in a position to affect change in the on-going robustness and resilience of those products.

You will collaborate with seniors and own Infrastructure Development Lifecycle Process as part of a delivery team focused on one or more products.

To help you really make a difference, you’ll be using the best tools and equipment for the job. We plan and track work in Jira, we document in Confluence, we communicate using Teams and Slack, we commit, build and deploy code with GitLab, we use best-in-class cloud services from Amazon Web Services (AWS), and we do it all on the latest MacBook Pro devices.


As a member of the DWP Engineering practice, you’ll have access to some fantastic learning and development resources; conferences with industry expert speakers, subscriptions to digital training solutions such as Cloud Academy, and comprehensive instructor-led training. You‘ll also have access to support through direct Slack channels with partners such as AWS, GitLab and MongoDB for every day on the job learning.

Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will include but are not restricted to, the following:

  • Design and implement infrastructure services/solutions to meet strategic plans and roadmaps.
  • Provide specialist technical support and assistance to junior staff and users, and also that of projects ensuring definition and delivery of requisite non-functional requirements to architectural and roadmap developments.
  • Responsible for operational management of services/solutions, ensuring performance and delivery to staff
  • Management of an operational area, a function, or a project team, act independently on day-to-day issues.
  • Apply different techniques to methods in analysing and resolving problems, working up new practices and procedures or modify existing processes to improve performance.
  • Responsible for ensuing all infrastructure management processes and services are documented and stored centrally.
  • Responsible for the provision of Management information reporting and escalation to senior stakeholders, ensuring alignment to best practice

This job role may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in their DWP office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and your office will be your contractual place of work. The number of days that anyone will be able to work at home will be determined primarily by business need but personal circumstances and other relevant circumstances will also be taken into account. Salary Information

Salary for this role is from £38,469 (Band min) to £41,480 (Band max).

Where the maximum salary of £41,480 is offered, a Digital Allowance of up to £5,000 per annum is available for exceptional candidates, based on our assessment of your skills and experience.

Our offer to successful candidates will be based on an assessment of your skills and experience as demonstrated at interview.

Existing Civil Servants who secure a new role on lateral transfer should maintain their current salary.

Existing Civil Servants who gain promotion may move to the bottom of the next grade pay scale or 10% increase in salary whichever would be the greater.

  • EC2 – Instances, Autoscaling groups, Lifecycle Policies / Lifecycle Hooks
  • CloudFormation / Terraform Infrastructure as Code – Advanced Level template scripting, knowledge of parameters, functions, references, mappings. Autoscaling and Non-Autoscaling templates, CFN-Init
  • VPC – Creating and managing VPCs, Subnets, Security Groups (Firewall rules), Network ACLS. VPC Peering, AWS Privatelink and VPC Endpoints, Understanding of HA systems
  • Linux - OS – Basic knowledge of Amazon Linux 2, Bash – fundamental experience – Grep, Installing Packages, User Account Management. Operating Systems – Advanced Knowledge of Windows Server 2008R2, 2012R2, 2016
  • HTTPS/Certificates/SSL/Mutual SSL – Understanding and experience of applying certificates, knowledge of modern encryption techniques
  • Live Service Management - Understanding of the importance of running a business critical production environment – ability to carefully follow change management process. Expertise of DevOps principals, good knowledge of incident management / change management, Knowledge of GIT - branching strategies, merging, push, pull requests etc
