ABOUT US

About the Council

We are home to some of the most exciting opportunities in the country. Our growth programme is possibly the largest and most ambitious in the country. £6 billion has already been invested by the private sector in Thurrock up to 2017, with 7,000 new jobs created and 1,170 new businesses coming to the borough, including leading ports and logistics centres, retail and creative industries. We expect a further 30,000 new jobs to be created by the year 2037. More than 1,000 acres of land are ready for commercial development, with 30,000 new homes likely to be built. Thurrock is at the heart of global trade and logistics, with no fewer than 3 international ports. We are well positioned on the M25 and A13 corridors, with excellent transport links west into London, north and east into Essex, and south into Kent.

A great place to live

Our urban centres are a vibrant mix of established towns and new young communities, with a diverse and growing population of around 160,000 residents. Rents are more affordable than those in neighboring London boroughs Our population is diverse, with a mix of nationalities living across our towns and villages. Massive investment and growth is bringing new jobs and opportunities to the area. For shoppers, we have 3 huge malls within easy reach – Lakeside in Thurrock, Bluewater and Westfield Stratford.

Green and pleasant land

Whilst London is directly on our eastern border, Thurrock itself is not as built-up. Behind our 18 miles of riverfront we have a varied green belt that covers 70% of the borough. Those who prefer unspoilt countryside will enjoy our 2 nature reserves – Rainham Marshes Nature Reserve and Thameside Nature Park – along with many other open parks and woodlands. Thurrock can offer you a great quality of life.

Equality duty

Thurrock Council is committed to eradicating discrimination on the basis of race, religion or belief, sex, gender reassignment, sexual orientation, disability, pregnancy and maternity, age and marital status. We also recognize that people can be disadvantaged by their social and economic circumstances, so we also work to eliminate discrimination and disadvantage caused by social class. We are committed to agile working and welcome applications from those interested in flexible working. We strongly welcome applications from individuals that consider themselves to have a disability and individuals from black and minority ethnic groups as we recognize the positive benefits of a more diverse workforce at all levels.

Our values

At the heart of our organisation is a common approach to defining ‘who we are’. Our values, quite simply, inform everything we do – our thoughts, words and actions.

Ambitious – by continually improving

Compassionate – by building relationships based on empathy, respect and dignity
