Main Purposes of the Job
The Airfield Safety Officer (ASO) is responsible for providing front line operational oversight of all airfield activities. The ASO will also provide assurances that a safe environment is being maintained by ensuring that relevant assets and infrastructure are operated safely in line with the requirements of the Aerodrome Licence.
The role also provides a 24/7 presence on the airfield in order to manage and mitigate any wildlife control hazards that may pose a risk to aircraft safety.
The ability to undertake tasks independently within a fast paced, dynamic and operational environment whilst demonstrating strong communication skills within a diverse team is essential to be successful in this role.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Safety Management
- Ensuring all available equipment and techniques are utilised effectively to meet the requirements of the Wildlife and Habitat Management Plan, reporting any potential risks to aircraft safety without delay to the ADM.
- Fulfil all responsibilities as defined within the BAL Emergency Plan and Snow Plan.
- Ensuring all Aerodrome Works are carried out in accordance with aerodrome procedure and Risk and Method Statements through the undertaking of live and post work inspections.
- Attendance and participation in safety meetings as required.
- Ensure the airfield remains safe and operational during periods of adverse weather including high winds and low visibility through effective implementation of procedures
- Maintain comprehensive knowledge of all relevant departmental and BAL documentation, peer reviewing as required
- In the event of any safety occurrence, ensure that all perishable evidence is gathered without delay and comprehensive information is collated and submitted within required safety reports
- Participate and actively contribute towards safety promotion activities and events
AIRFIELD OPERATIONS – AIRFIELD SAFETY OFFICER JOB DESCRIPTION
- Ensure daily activities on and around the airfield are conducted in accordance with standards and recommended practice to ensure that a safe, efficient, and effective airside operation is maintained.
- Undertake safety and compliance audits and inspections as required.
- Ensure that the security of the airfield boundary is monitored and maintained at all times
- Identify and dynamically manage operational safety risks in accordance with company procedure
- Ensure all airside Near Miss events and hazards are captured and recorded within recognised platforms.
Performance
- Ensure that all daily duties and monitoring activities are completed in accordance with company procedures
- To support in the delivery of KPI’s and SPI’s as published in the annual Aerodrome Safety Plan

- Ensure that good communication is maintained both internally and with external stakeholders, and that a Just Culture is promoted
- Demonstrate the highest levels of integrity at all times
- Identify areas for continuous improvement and development opportunities within the team
- Demonstrate a commitment towards addressing and resolving any areas where performance or behaviours may fall below levels of those that are expected
- Undertake relevant training as required, ensuring competence is maintained to undertake all ASO functions.
