Job Description
There is an opportunity available within our Financial Planning Team as a Trainee financial adviser.
Not all people are familiar with what a financial adviser does so hear is an outline for you.
At Portafina we specialise in pension planning. As a financial adviser we help clients save and invest their money to have the best retirement possible. We do this by providing advice on their current pensions, such as money purchase or defined benefit pension schemes.
To give someone advice about their pension you must understand them as a person and all of their financial make up. These are things such as their current savings and investments, current income and expenditure, debts, Mortgage and any liabilities as well as their family make up, such as their husband or wife’s financial details when providing joint advice, as they would typically impact on them financially now and in the future.
The skill of the job is to obtain all this information without the experience feeling like a form filling exercise as this provides the client with a more engaging and enjoyable experience.
There are 2 ways we typically help clients, by advising on pension release, whereby a client has a need they wish to address such as making home improvements, repaying debt, or making a purchase of some sort.
We would then give them advice on, can they afford to take this money out of their pension, are there other ways in which they could fund these expenses and is their current pension suitable to help them do what they are trying to do.
The other way in which we help clients is to review their pension. A lot of people have accumulated pensions over the years that become a headache to keep track of. The investments that they have may not be suitable for them based on the gains they are aiming to make or risk they are prepared to take.
As a financial adviser you help clients find the right investment for them, typically made up of stocks and shares or corporate or government bonds. We also recommend the best provider to look after their money. You complete analysis of their current pension, looking at things like the cost of the plan, performance such as the annualised return as well as the portfolio risk the client is taking.
After your review the client is presented with a report with your findings which should detail why you believe it’s in the client’s best interest to do what you are advising to do.
All of this happens when you become fully qualified, to become fully qualified we help you through the relevant R01 to R06 exams. We provide training and support for you and fund the initial cost of completing the course.
All we ask is for our candidates to be hungry and committed to bettering themselves which in turn betters our client’s experience.
Further details of the role are:
- Providing a friendly and engaging service by way of telephone or video appointment
- Help clients understand what pensions they have and what options are available to them when reviewing their pension/s without giving advice
