Job Description

Are you an experienced TPAC trainer? Are you looking for a new challenge? If so, we want to hear from you!

WMP are currently looking for experienced TPAC trainers to join our force either as transferees, rejoiners and Police Staff (Click here for police staff role).

We will also accept and consider applications from qualified Police driver trainers who are qualified to deliver standard police driving courses.

As a TPAC trainer, you will be working under the direction of the Training Manager for the Driver Development Unit, on a team of Police Driving Instructors to deliver driving training to learners who are required to drive Police vehicles at Advanced and TPAC (Tactical Pursuit and Containment) standards.

You will be responsible for ensuring that training standards are in line with national guidance set by the College of Policing.

This is an exciting time here at West Midlands Police and we want you to be part of it.

Joining us as a TPAC trainer gives you flexibility as we consider part time and flexible working.

And we know it’s not all about the job. The West Midlands is a great place to live too. The region offers great leisure, sport, shopping and transport options. Birmingham Airport is an international hub, served by most of the budget and major airlines. Trains from Birmingham can reach central London in less than 90 minutes and our Metro tram system is expanding too. There’s always major acts appearing at our local stadiums and arenas, big name shows visiting theatres in our major cities and vibrant nightlife across the region. There’s five Michelin starred restaurants, dozens of country parks and green space to explore and cheap house prices too. Birmingham even has more canals than Venice!

Back to our offer to you – WMP is committed to supporting all colleagues with continuous professional development, great staff offers, associations and social clubs, wellbeing support, and a comprehensive development programme across the force.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsibility for the delivery of Advanced and TPAC Training.
  • Ensure compliance with personnel policies and procedures.
  • Continued Driver accreditation in line with College of Policing Guidance.
  • Evaluate current delivery methods in order to propose ways of enhancing delivery and implementing new approaches to learning.
  • Have a full understanding of the current National Driver Policy, National APP/CoP and legislation relating to driver training and law.

To be eligible to apply, you must:

  • Be serving, or have served in a Home Office force or BTP.
  • To hold a recognised Police Driver Trainers Course qualification and be operationally competent to drive at Advanced and TPAC standards.
  • Be an accredited Advanced and TPAC trainer (qualified).
  • Knowledge and experience of Road Policing.
  • Health & Safety Risk Assessor.
  • Confident to provide Evidence within a court of law, representing the Force as a Subject Matter Expert within the field of Driving Standards and Training.
  • Evidence of excellent communication skills, both verbally and written, with the ability to produce concise and well-reasoned reports with appropriate recommendations when required. Effective maintenance of systems and record books and presentation of reports when required.

Desirable:

  • Experience of environmental scanning to embrace operational practices, technology and legislation.

  • Hours of Work and Flexibility: Core hours 0800 x 1600 Monday to Friday, however there is flexibility within this as we aim to be a more inclusive department.

  • Requirements of the role will occasionally include work outside of these core hours including evenings and weekend working to support Operational L&D or the operational needs of West Midlands Police.

You may be required to attend court to provide evidence relating to driver training.

The role will be a part of the Driver Development Unit, currently based at Halesowen, however, the applicant will be required to work at all current bases within the Force as and when required or directed by the Driving School Training Manager.

West Midlands Police is a Disability Confident Leader - the highest level an organisation can achieve under the scheme run by the Department of Work and Pensions. As part of our commitment we operate a ‘Disability Confident Interview Scheme’ - all candidates who declare a disability and meet the essential criteria for the role will be offered an interview.

It is important to note that there may be occasions where it is not practicable or appropriate to interview all disabled people who meet the essential criteria for the job. For example: in certain recruitment situations such as high-volume, seasonal and high-peak times, the employer may wish to limit the overall numbers of interviews offered to both disabled people and non-disabled people. In these circumstances, the employer could select the candidates who best meet the essential criteria for the job, as they would do for non-disabled applicants.

"Diversity and Inclusion Vision: Maximise the potential of people from all backgrounds through a culture of fairness and inclusion to deliver the best service for our communities."
