Job Description

As a fully qualified Specialist Biomedical Scientists you would join our busy Haematology & Blood Transfusion Department. The department is located at Crosshouse Hospital, Kilmarnock, with a satellite laboratory at Ayr Hospital, and processes specimens for all hospitals and GP surgeries in the Ayrshire and Arran area. The population served is approximately 380,000.

Our laboratory is well equipped with modern analytical equipment - Sysmex XN and BioRad IH500 platforms on both hospital sites. Computing is by the Clinisys Winpath system.

You should possess a BSc Honours Degree in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent and also a Specialist Diploma in Haematology or experience working at specialist level.

Your degree must be approved by the Institute of Biomedical Science/Health Professions Council, and you must contact the State Registration Unit, IBMS, 12 Coldbath Square, London, EC1R 5HL (Tel 020 7713 0214) to check that their degree is approved before submitting an application.

Candidates who have not completed an IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Haematology (with Blood Transfusion) will be considered for a trainee Band 6 (AfC Annex 21 applies).

On-the-job training will be given together with opportunity for further study up to MSc level.

Hours: 37.5 hours per week over 7 days which will include working some public holidays (including Christmas/New Year). The department currently operates a 24/7 shift system which will include working back shift, overnights and weekends and this will be a contractual requirement for you when designated competent to do so. Until suitably experienced, hours will be predominantly 9am to 10pm.

Driving Licence/access to a car is required for this post.
