Job Description

Contract: 4 - 6 Weeks
Purpose: Junior Summer Residential Programme
Start Date: 9 th July – 20 th August 2023
Training date: 8 th July 2023 (full day in person) / half-day online training (date TBC)
Positions Available: 12 (depending on student numbers)
Working hours: Average of 50 hours a week with a day and half off. There may be times where you exceed the minimum hours

Responsible for: Student welfare and activities

Celtic English Academy, established in 2004, is a friendly and welcoming British Council accredited English language school in the centre of Cardiff. We take pride in our small class sizes, great teachers and wonderful support staff. For the past 19 years we have been offering a range of classes to both adults and younger learners. Due to the success of our 2022 young learner courses, we will be opening a summer school in Monmouth for the first time this summer.
“Glorious gardens and spectacular countryside everywhere you look. Wherever you are in Monmouthshire there's always something to see or do, whatever the weather” This year, situated in the luscious green pastures of Wales, the beautiful British boarding school, Monmouth School for Boys, will be the home for our 2023 Junior Summer Programme.

The aim of Junior Summer Programme is to provide students aged 11-17 with English language lessons

every morning and with a variety of afternoon activities such as:

  • Football
  • Badminton
  • Tennis
  • Swimming

… and much, much more!

In addition, our learners will have the opportunity to take part in some exciting half-day and full-day excursions, which will include:

  • Big Pit
  • River Walks
  • Exploring Bristol and London
  • Lots of other exciting and informative visits to regional towns, cities and places of interest

Main purpose of job

The main role of a Summer Social Activity Leader is to engage with the students and, in turn, make sure that the students engage with all aspects of the programme - classes, activities and excursions. This means communicating, interacting, and generally being alongside the students in making sure that they are happy, involved, and having fun. Most importantly, ensuring that safeguarding practices are upheld at all times.

As a Summer Social Activity Leader, you will need to ensure the successful delivery of activities onsite and offsite. As well as leading activities and excursions, SAL's are always expected to perform to a high standard of physical, emotional and social care for the students.

SOCIAL ACTIVITY LEADER

Upon the completion of the role, there is an opportunity for Activity Leaders to be included within the international learning exchange programme, Taith. The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Welcoming new students to the centre
  • Setting up / packing up the centre and displaying / removing signs
  • Supervising during breaks and lunchtimes
  • Preparing and taking part in afternoon and evening activities and half and full day excursions

(this includes activities such as arts and crafts, walking, and leading trips to London and

more!)

  • Assisting with fire drills
  • Understanding the risk assessments provided by the Centre Manager
  • Providing welfare support for all students, ensuring all safeguarding guidelines are upheld

and reporting potentially harmful situations

  • Encourage students to always speak English

The successful candidate must meet the following requirements:

  • Ability to work as part of a team and act as a leader
  • Self-motivated, reliable and able to use initiative
  • Adaptable to change with effective problem-solving skills

The following skills and/or qualifications are desirable:

  • Previous activity/group leader experience
  • Sports, arts, music, drama or other recreational skills
  • Experience or strong interest in working with international students
  • Experience or strong interest in working with children or teenagers
  • First Aid qualified or any similar relevant qualifications
  • A standard B1 Driving Licence. Anything higher (e.g D1) is a plus

1 Education, Training and Qualifications

1.1 Maths and English at GCSE grade C or above - Essential
1.2 First Aid and / or Mental Health First Aid valid certificate - Desirable
1.3 Any training relating to pastoral care, safeguarding of under 18s or student welfare of international students - Desirable
1.4 Willingness to work towards a safeguarding level 1,2 or 3 qualification - Essential
1.5 Enhanced DBS- Desirable

2 Knowledge

2.1 Computer literate with excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word, Excel and PowerPoint - Essential
2.2 Knowledge of the ELT or international education sector - Desirable
2.3 Knowledge of the Data Protection Act - Desirable


3 Experience

3.1 Experience of giving a high standard of customer service - Essential
3.2 Experience working in a customer-facing, reception environment and taking enquiries, payments etc. - Essential
3.3 Experience working in a fast-paced office, hospitality or administrative environment - Desirable
3.4 Experience working with international students or customers from a wide range of cultures/countries - Desirable
