Job Description: Health Care Assistant (HCA)
25 hours per week
ROLE PURPOSE
To provide Health Care Assistant (HCA) services to the practice population of Snaith and Rawcliffe Medical Group.
Supported by the nursing team within the practice, the HCA will deliver care within the boundaries of their role and in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols.
Be responsible for the care delivered, demonstrating critical thinking and skills in clinical decision making within the parameters of their qualifications and role requirements, being aware of when to refer the patient on to another member of the multi-disciplinary team for further care.
They will focus upon supporting patients to be healthy by assessing their needs, providing HCA care, health education advice, screening activities, implementing care at the surgery, community, or other settings, maintaining clinically accurate records, and running clinics. The successful applicant will also be responsible for the time management of their clinics.
They will work collaboratively with the general practice team to meet the needs of patients and support the delivery of policy and procedures, and providing HCA guidance as required.
HEALTHCARE ASSISTANT (HCA)
Training: Training to NVQ Level 3
Accountability: to the Nurse Manager
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
Therapeutic procedures-
· Work alongside clinicians in the provision of patient care
· Assist with minor surgery
· Administer flu vaccinations as per HCA Flu protocol
· Administer covid vaccinations once trained and competent
· Administer pneumococcal vaccination once trained and competent
· Perform audiometry
· Phlebotomy
· Follow up patients for wound care once reviewed by a registered clinician initially
· Post-op procedures -suture and staple removal
· Administer B12 injections as per HCA protocol
· Diabetic foot checks
Health screening and Promotion-
· New patient registration checks, referring on when appropriate
· Assist with Learning Disability checks
· Appreciate the principals of ‘Healthy Living’
· Provide relevant health promotion literature for patients and maintain stocks
Measurement and investigations-
· Urinalysis
· Spirometry
· Complete Dementia assessments
· Measurement of height and weight- referring on when appropriate
· Measurement of BP, temperature and pulse
· Peak Flow measurements
· Recording of ECGs
· Fit the 24-hour BP machines
· Recognise changes in the patients’ observations which must be reported and acted on and refer on
Communication with patients and Teams in practice-
· Initiate sessions, close sessions and be responsible for time management
· Gain appropriate consent from the patient
· Work effectively within the practice team
· Interact with patients and colleagues in a professional manner
· Assist clinicians in emergency management of patients
· Enable patients to access appropriate professionals in the practice team
· Act as a chaperone
· Clearly present patients’ point of view to others
· Contribute new ideas to improve patient care
Administrative responsibilities-
· Ensure stock items are ordered and provided in GP rooms
· Follow infection control standards
· Recording fridge checks daily
Clinical Practice Development-
· Maintain set standards of organisation in the surgery
· Take appropriate action if standards are not being met
· Recognise potential areas of conflict, preventing where possible and reporting to senior members of staff if unable to resolve
Job Type: Part-time
Part-time hours: 25 per week
Salary: Up to £11.17 per hour
