Job Description

Protection intern

International Committee for the Red Cross

Hybrid role based in London, United Kingdom

Full-time, 1 year Internship

About us

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is a neutral, independent, and impartial organisation whose exclusively humanitarian mission is to protect the lives and dignity of victims of armed conflict and other situations of violence and to provide them with assistance. The ICRC supports the coordination and delivery of international relief activities conducted by the Red Cross and Crescent Movement in situations of armed conflict. It also endeavours to prevent suffering by promoting and strengthening international humanitarian law (IHL) and universal humanitarian principles.

The ICRC’s Regional Delegation to the UK and Ireland has offices in London and Belfast, undertaking operations, diplomacy, partnerships and influencing. The aim is to support and improve decision-making, policy and practice on conflict, humanitarian action, and IHL as well as to raise awareness of humanitarian issues with key stakeholders. ICRC works and coordinates closely with the British and Irish Red Cross Societies.

Protection activities in the UK and Ireland include engagement with practitioners and policymakers on the respect of IHL and mitigation of civilian harm in operations overseas, and in the support given to parties to the conflict. It also includes a detention programme in England, Wales and Northern Ireland (with a focus on security detainees and restrictive regimes) as well as work aimed at understanding and raising with stakeholders the humanitarian concerns linked to the impact of counter terrorism/security measures on families and communities. The ICRC also supports community mediation in Northern Ireland and works together with the British Red Cross and Irish Red Cross on their Family Tracing services.
