Description
SMC are on the search for applicants with a genuine enthusiasm for design engineering and a curiosity about the business and the manufacturing industry. Based in Milton Keynes, you will work in one of our design teams - European Technical Centre (ETC) or SMC Design Engineering Group - both are part of the SMC group and are based in Crownhill.
You will also have the opportunity to work closely with all manufacturing functions to ensure designs align with corporate best practice and are engineered for efficient manufacture at the SMC factories in Milton Keynes, Italy or Czech Republic.
About you:
You’ll be able to demonstrate your interest in engineering through hobbies (car mechanics, fixing your bike etc..) and possible work experience. The successful applicant will have a strong desire to learn, good attention to detail, be organised and able to manage their time and own workload. Good communication and team working skills are essential. You’ll be at home in a collaborative working environment and tick that ‘team player’ box. Oh, and good timekeeping is a must!
What will the apprentice be doing?
- You will learn compliance of health & safety, quality and organisational regulations
- Learn to understand technical drawings and specifications to be able to create your own
- Learn to produce CAD models and engineering drawings
- Identify inaccuracies or discrepancies in engineering drawings
- Build the knowledge to develop concepts to solve engineering challenges
- Gain skills in manufacturing methods.

Entry requirements
You will have a minimum of 5 GCSE’s grades 4-9 (A-C) or equivalent, which should include Mathematics (grade 6 or above), English Language (grade 4 or above) and a Science or Technical subject (grade 6 or above).
Training to be provided
You will attend Milton Keynes College for 1 day per week on the Engineering Design and Draughtsperson standard.
You will also benefit from ongoing support and training within the company.

SMC champion employee development and following successful completion of your apprenticeship would lead to a Junior
Design Engineer position with the aim of progressing to a Design Engineer.
