About Us:

Enjoy great latitude in a space filled with opportunity, to bring new ideas to light, and to influence transport planning in an evolving and vibrant County.

At Surrey County Council (SCC), we put people at the heart of everything we do, and so it is important we encourage and promote activities that will lead to healthier living lifestyles, most certainly, when it relates to movement of people and goods. We strive to achieve this objective by balancing the needs of the public, the environment, and the local economy in a way that drives prosperity at home, work and at leisure.

The Role:

Working with the Strategic Transport Group, the role of Graduate Transport Planner will help to make improvements to the streets and roads of SCC. You will be part of a team which is at the heart of promoting sustainable transport modes, while also playing a contributory role to other complimentary initiatives such as place making, Electric Vehicle Charging points, local cycle and walking plans, liveable neighbourhoods etc.

You will play a key part in supporting team objectives, transport observations, reporting, stakeholder engagement, an advocate of SCC transport policy to other authorities as appropriate and to lead on assigned projects from its inception until to project close. You will also be actively involved in transport planning work which will involve elements such as analysis of data, sighting common trends and drawing conclusions. Along the way, undertaking site visits, meeting other officers and being involved in public engagement exercises, presentations, and attending workshops etc.

To some extent, the role will also help to develop your personal skills and bring support where personal development needs are consistent to the advancement of the Council’s business.

As a Graduate Transport Planner, you will be a part of the Transport Policy Team working with Transport Planners, Engineers, Project Managers, Councillors and Contractors helping to shape transport policy and transport programmes delivery.

You will support Team Managers with project and programme development, stakeholder engagement planning and delivery, as well as other activities which will aid SCC in meeting its Climate Change targets.

This position is on a professional development programme (PDP). Alongside your work, you will be expected to undertake a sponsored professional qualification at a post-graduate level. The course duration is between 2-3 years. You will benefit from paid time off to study and from an accelerated pay progression upon meeting your learning objectives. Mentoring will be provided by experienced colleagues and progression will be regularly monitored through one-to-one meetings.

About You:

To join us in this role, you don’t necessarily need a lot of prior experience, provided you can demonstrate knowledge and understanding of current planning policy guidance relating to SCC and some basic understanding of project management principles.

We will expect you to have a degree or Masters in a subject such as civil engineering, transport planning, town planning, geography or any other related discipline.

Crucially, it will important you are able to demonstrate you are willing to learn, showing confidence you are able to organise and deliver packages of work in good time. Highly literate and numerate, with ability to interpret plans, draft correspondence and reports. Ability to influence people at all levels by clearly and persuasively communicating your recommendations.

In not more than 2000 words, you should describe how you meet the person specification requirements (education, skills & abilities, experience, representative accountabilities and personal accountabilities) as set out in the job description.

At Surrey, our values and behaviours are just as important as our skills and abilities. They shape who we are as an organisation. Find out more about the values we follow.
