Role: Senior Control Manager
Salary: c.£76,000 plus company benefits

We have a fantastic opportunity for the right person to lead the Avanti West Coast Current Operations team in the live delivery of our timetable and in refining the strategy to continually develop it. You will have overall responsibility for the leadership of the people within Operations Control. You will be responsible for ensuring that our timetable is delivered safely, reliably, consistently, competently and confidently. Working closely with Network Rail and our own route management teams, you will role model the behaviour required by our own staff to deliver an industry-leading train service. This role is based in our Head office in Birmingham.
What are the essentials of the job?
- Create a culture of support, encouragement, challenge and engagement so that all members of the Control team understand their responsibilities and where to go for help in delivering them.
- Act as a senior point of decision and contact for the live delivery of the timetable, providing support and direction to Control and acting as a conduit to senior management.
- Collaborating with Network Rail and other train operating companies to develop strategies and techniques in which we can continually improve joint working to manage the network and move customers in the most efficient way possible. Work with them to agree strategies and contingencies at the earliest opportunity when service recovery is required in reaction to incidents on the network.
- Develop strategies for improvement plan of the train service and deliver them through robust, resourced and managed projects. Work closely with Network Rail to ensure a robust quite of train service management improvement plans are in place cross industry.
- Lead on compiling business cases for expenditure where this is required. Work collaboratively with Network Rail to support infrastructure-based schemes that benefit our train service, including the effect of extreme weather and external events
- Working with the Performance team to ensure that Control are regularly briefed in incident handling and feedback to make sure they are continually refining their decisions and processes. Ensure that Controller capability is such that it enables a consistency to timetable delivery and disruption management.
- Develop and embed metrics for our management of disruption to take into account the minimisation of disruption to customers and the efficient delivery of information to staff and customers.
- Accountability for assuring Controller competency and development. Working with the Operations Training Team to develop an iterative programme of continuous Controller development, ensuring that their knowledge base is industry leading.
- Develop and agree expenditure budget for activities and projects. Monitor and report spending and resolve variances.
Experience, Skills and Knowledge
- A coaching style of leadership
- Ability to identify underlying issues to regular challenges and develop sustainable solutions
- Experience of setting up and deploying effective command structures
- High level of interpersonal sensitivity
- Proven track record in leading teams and managing people and processes
- Proven track record of stakeholder engagement
- Detailed knowledge of the routes, infrastructure and rolling stock operated by Avanti West Coast
- A good knowledge of Control management systems and processes
- Able to base decisions upon factual information and numerate analysis
- Good understanding and awareness of the train service management techniques and risks
- Excellent interpersonal skills with an innate ability to build constructive relationships with people at all levels and from all relevant organisations
Qualifications & Training
- Educated to degree standard or relevant industry experience
Job Types: Full-time, Permanent
Salary: £75,000.00-£80,000.00 per year
Schedule:
- 8 hour shift
- Monday to Friday
