Our Engineering function enables the delivery of our equipment and support by providing specialist expertise in domain-related disciplines such as: mechanical, electrical & power distribution; software, sensors & electronic systems; acquisition safety & environmental protection; quality assurance; ordnance munitions & explosives, as well as systems engineering & integration.
The Internal Technical Support (ITS) team is Defence Equipment & Supports in-house technical consultancy team. Within ITS, the Safety and Environment team promotes skills development, standardises approaches and increases knowledge transfer across DE&S by holding delivery teams to account against internal and regulatory requirements.
Established to reduce our reliance on Private Sector Support (PSS) expenditure across the whole of DE&S. The ITS team is a significant and growing area of consultancy and provides the business with a Safety or Environmental Advice services.
Safety and Environmental Consultants can choose their permanent duty station (PDS) from the list below:
- MOD Abbey Wood, Filton, Bristol, BS34 8JH.
- Kentigern House, 65 Brown Street, Glasgow, G2 8EX.
- Wattisham Flying Station, 2 Valley Road, Ipswich, Suffolk, IP7 7RE.
- MOD Manchester, Piccadilly Gate, Store Street, Manchester, M1 2WD.
Please note, that due to the nature of the projects involved, some of these roles will require applicants to be Sole UK nationals.
Please note regular attendance to the stated site will be required for this position.

Responsibilities for Safety or Environmental Consultant

The responsibilities, will include, but are not limited to:
- Working on complex products, systems, and services
- Sourcing fixed priced technical consultancy tasks to meet customer needs and ensure they are delivered to cost, time and customer satisfaction.
- Negotiating and deliver against a commitment to carry out accurately costed tasks.
- Developing artefacts/evidence used in the assessment of safety risk, and consider the implications of changes to equipment design, offering mitigation advice in the process.
- Implementing and developing safety or environmental management systems for products, services, or systems, as either part of design or in-service support.
- Act as an independent subject practitioner, supporting our delivery teams and industry partners with best practice, legislative and regulatory compliance, mitigation techniques and consistently encouraging continuous improvement at all levels.
Utilising your exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills to offer all the above services across multiple areas, including Maritime, Land, Weapons, Air and Submarines, ensuring that your solutions are understood and appropriately executed.
Person specification
To be successful with your application, you’ll need to show that you meet the following essential criteria:
- You will have demonstrable and relevant consultancy experience as a safety or environmental advisor, with the ability to scope and deliver high quality outputs to time and cost against developed programmes of work.
- You will hold a minimum of a Level 4 (e.g., HNC) qualification in an engineering or science discipline, or will demonstrate equivalent relevant industry experience.
- You will have demonstrable experience using a range of safety or environmental tools and techniques, to provide advice and guidance on complex projects, e.g., Hazard Log Management; Hazard Identification; Risk Assessment and As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP) justifications or environmental compliance or environmental assessment.
- You will have demonstratable experience in the development and writing of safety or environmental artefacts in support of compelling safety bodies of evidence.
In addition to the responsibilities above, the following technical competences and behaviours will be assessed at interview:
- Application of Analytical Techniques (Practitioner).
- Technical Risk Management (Practitioner).
- Leadership.
- Managing a quality service.
