Rothamsted Research's bioimaging facility (https://www.rothamsted.ac.uk/bioimaging) is seeking an enthusiastic and driven electron microscopy specialist to join their team.
The Role:
The facility which provides world-class microscopy services to the researchers at Rothamsted Research, their collaborators, as well as external clients, harbours a variety of equipment for electron, light and fluorescence microscopy and sample preparation including a JEOL JEM-2100plus, as well two SEMs, an LV SEM and a FEG SEM both fitted with new Quorum cryo systems. Jointly with the other team members, the electron microscopy expert is expected to give excellent assistance and training to all users of the facility, internal and external.
The successful candidate will provide essential electron microscopy services to increase the impact of the research output of the institute and be responsible for assisting researchers in the delivery of a professional and comprehensive EM service. Therefore, the successful candidate should have proven experience in biological scientific research. The service provided will include EM sample preparation and imaging for users, training of new users and assisting users in their imaging experiments.
The successful candidate will work closely with members of the team in order to achieve the facility’s aims of providing access to advanced imaging capabilities through efficient cost recovery. They will also be expected to manage financial resources relevant to the laboratory, including monitoring and ordering consumables and to assist with the preparation of grant proposals and capital equipment bids. They will be responsible for routine microscope maintenance and liaising with engineers and manufacturers to ensure the smooth running of the equipment. An in-depth understanding of electron microscopy hardware, and troubleshooting simple issues is essential.
About You:
Ideally you will have:
- A Ph.D. degree in life science area (or equivalent strong research project skills) is required
- Hands-on experience in diverse sample preparation methods and ultramicrotomy
- Experienced in the operation of a TEM (advanced EM imaging will be a plus)
- Highly service-oriented and collaborative mindset
- Ability to solve technical problems related to equipment and preparation
Good technical skills are essential, as is a meticulous and organized approach. Candidates should have an understanding of cell biological techniques and familiarity with plant/crop/fungal and other biological samples.
