The Centre for Academic English is a busy and dynamic team of people who believe in, and are committed to, providing the highest quality of academic language and literacy courses to support the research and teaching of STEM subjects at Imperial College London. The Centre provides a range of courses and workshops to better support College members in communicating their science more powerfully and more effectively. Our sector-leading summer pre-sessional programme is a key part of this provision.
The Centre is seeking to appoint a number of well-qualified, experienced and adaptable EAP teachers who will deliver our 6-week summer pre-sessional course to prospective Imperial postgraduate students. The course is uniquely STEMM focused as it uses in-house materials designed to engage students with Imperial research and Imperial researchers while acquiring competence and confidence in academic STEMM communication. Teachers will manage two small groups of students (approximately 12 students per class) and provide targeted classroom input and feedback to scaffold and monitor students’ development of the discourse and competencies they need to succeed on their chosen degree programme. The course will be delivered on campus but in a paperless format with all resources and materials provided online via Microsoft OneNote Class Notebooks and other Microsoft 365 apps.
You will:
- Deliver classes to postgraduate pre-sessional students for approximately 20 contact hours per week
- Teach general academic literacy classes and lead discipline-specific language and discourse workshops that meet the needs of STEMM students
- Deliver course content through Microsoft 365 applications, specifically OneNote class notebooks and other Microsoft 365 apps.
- Evaluate students’ formative oral and written work and monitor progress to standard
- Provide clear, detailed, timely and effective feedback
- Actively participate in regular standardisation meetings so that you can mark summative tests and assessment tasks to standard
- Guide students’ independent study
- Perform administrative duties required by the course such as recording students’ progress, completing work records and attendance registers in a timely manner
- Actively participate in ongoing training and CPD throughout the course
- Liaise regularly and collaborate with colleagues, and report any areas of concern to the CfAE Director or Pre-sessional Course Director
- You will be an articulate, effective and highly competent communicator in speech and writing
-
You must have a first degree, and a completed DELTA (or equivalent) and/or a completed postgraduate degree in Applied Linguistics/TESOL/EAP or other relevant area. In exceptional cases we may consider applicants with a Master’s in a relevant STEMM subject with a minimum CELTA teaching qualification (or equivalent) and some EAP experience.
-
You will have proven classroom teaching skills with experience of teaching an existing course syllabus, and assessing EAP students at a range of levels in higher education contexts or similar in the UK or abroad
-
You must be competent and confident in your use of ICT and have experience teaching with Microsoft 365 apps (Teams, OneNote, Class Notebooks, Forms and Flip) and using core Microsoft 365 applications (Excel and PowerPoint)
