The role
Port Operations Graduate. This is a graduate/trainee role.
The role will initially be a mix between working outside (on ships and in terminals) and office work to gain a real insight into how the day-to-day operations work and how the various jobs/roles are undertaken whilst learning a variety of practical skills.
During the 24 month programme time will be spent in each of the ports departments such as Port Agency, Port Operations, Transport/Order Fulfilment & Engineering. After 24 months it may lead into a full time role in one of the departments depending on business needs & the interests of the individual.
The role is not limited to but may include the following:
- Port Operations department – ensure the smooth transition of vessels and their cargo from the ship, to the quayside and into storage. This involves working with the operations team regarding ship/berth planning, labour planning, general operations and also undertaking jobs such as tallying, checking, stevedoring, operating plant/equipment such as forklifts & overhead gantry cranes. Full training & competency checks will be given beforehand
- Port Agency department – critical front line role in shipping. Ship operators rely on port agents to act as the eye and ears and ensure the safe and secure running of their ships. This involves providing ships husbandry including pre arrivals, customs clearance, arranging bunkers/stores for the ships master, organising pilotage/tugs, creation of the statement of facts
- Transport/Order Fulfilment department – ensure the complete process from point of order to arrange cargo to the customer as an added value service within the port sphere. This involves working within the transport team with stock control, organising transport of cargo to/from site, customer queries & customer order processing
- Engineering department – crucial department within the port involved in keeping all plant/equipment operational and safe to use. This involves assisting the engineering team with job allocations, purchasing, health & safety & general management
- Obtaining full competency on the scanner phones, stock control system & health and safety management system followed by assisting with training other port operatives
- Contributing to and assisting with health & safety such as risk assessments & safe systems of work
- Working towards health & safety and port operations qualifications
- Any reasonable duties as required by the management team
Accountabilities
- Participate in any training deemed necessary in order to improve individual skills
- Subject to suitable training for operating plant & equipment (including pre-use checks)
- Effectively promote a health, safety, and environment culture
- Carry out work according to the risk assessments and safe systems of work
- Understand and ensure targets are met
- Cleaning of equipment and site as required and assisting in various other port duties
- Active approach in identifying improvements and opportunities
Required skills
- Must be 18+ to work on a Port
- Degree qualified with a minimum achieved or predicted 2:2 including 5 GCSEs including both English & Maths at B or above (or equivalent)
- Proactive attitude to Health & Safety and a willingness to contribute to/improve risk assessments and safe systems of work
- Excellent ability to navigate IT equipment e.g. smartphone & computer
- Experience of using Office 365 - Word & Excel
- Willingness to obtain qualifications & undertake further training
Desirable skills (not essential)
- Experience of working in a busy & fast-paced environment
- Full UK driving licence (car) licence
- Experience of operating plant & equipment preferably in a similar industrial environment
- Previous experience of health & safety such as contributing to risk assessments and safe systems of work
Working hours
- A minimum of 40 hours per week
- Standard working hours 0800 to 1700 hrs (1-hour lunch)
- Hours may vary on a day-to-day basis depending on operations being conducted & department working in
