About Birmingham City Council
The scale of opportunity in Birmingham is unrivalled and cannot be found in any other city across Europe right now.
Birmingham is a city of opportunity and we’re drawing on its rich history and previous successes to become even better. That’s why we’ve developed challenging objectives to help us to reach even greater heights. With our ambitious Chief Executive and her leadership team driving forward bold plans for growth and development across the city, Birmingham is fast on the way to becoming even more brilliant. Our goal is to provide best-in-class services for residents and at the heart of these plans will be a high performing City Operations directorate, which is where you come in.
About the role
Our Assistant Director of Highways will have the opportunity to lead an expert team of c.250 staff across multiple specialist service areas, including parking operations, highways contract management, highways delivery, and flood risk management. There will be scope to bring in new ideas and to take the lead in reimagining highways service delivery and improve the quality of services and outcomes for our residents. We will support you to deliver pilot schemes to drive better value for money, as well as to strengthen digital innovation, which all make for an even better resident experience. As the largest local authority in Europe, the infrastructure that needs to be maintained within Birmingham is hugely complex, meaning this role provides the opportunity to work in both a regional and national context in collaboration with multiple key partners, ensuring greater connectivity for our city.
About you
If you can demonstrate real passion and experience of leading community engagement, with a strong desire to do even more for our citizens, we’d like to hear from you. Whilst an engineering background is preferable, this is not essential to the role. In return, we’re offering unrivalled opportunities for growth and development and a genuine investment in your future with the council. We’ll embrace your strength of leadership and your conviction to be bold, curious, and commercial – this is the Birmingham way.
