Job Description

Job Introduction

The role is within the Newsroom Systems team within the BBC Technology Group. You will work with a small team of systems engineers defining and supporting the cloud infrastructure that hosts the BBC’s news planning and crew deployment system. This business-critical software enables our local, national and international news teams to plan our news coverage and deploy journalists and equipment to cover the stories you see on the BBC’s news output.

Main Responsibilities

You will deploy new software releases, improve monitoring of the live system and troubleshoot issues that occur. You will enable integrations with other systems and contribute to the specification of new features. We host the system on AWS and define our infrastructure using version-controlled code. We want to automate as much as possible, so we you will be creating and enhancing scripts (the existing ones are mostly written in Python, but we’re open-minded). You will work with our information security team to identify and implement improvements to the resilience of our systems.

Are you the right candidate?

As an organisation we support our colleagues in gaining new skills. To be successful in this role you will have experience of some, but not necessarily all, of the following:

  • Managing cloud infrastructure, particularly on AWS.
  • Running large datastores such as relational databases and search systems.
  • Administrating Windows Servers and working knowledge of Linux servers.
  • Troubleshooting issues with complex business-critical systems.
  • Assessing system security and continually looking to improve it.
  • Integrating systems using RESTful APIs and message queues.
  • Working with software suppliers on fixes and new features.
  • Mentoring and motivating colleagues.
  • Working in a broadcasting or news environment.

We are committed to equality of opportunity and welcome applications from individuals, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, socio-economic background, religion and/or belief.
