Job Description
The primary function of the caretaking role within school is to open the school each morning and to ready the school areas to enable the safe and free flowing arrival of staff and students. Within the role and once the school has been opened, are a range of duties necessary to enable the school to function and remain compliant with statutory health and safety requirements. The compliance checks are listed, but not limited to:
- Water temperature testing
- Tap flushing and reporting any risk of legionella for proper testing
. Emergency lighting
- Fire Alarms
- Fire Extinguishers
- Asbestos register
As such the caretaker must have knowledge and training to ensure these tests are carried out and recorded in line with statutory requirements. The caretaker must also partake, as part of their duties, in both internal and external housekeeping duties these are listed below as,
- Morning School Opening
- Replenishing all toilet rolls, soaps and hand towels daily across the school
- Cleaning the sports hall floor with a weekly wash
- Washing cloths
- Removal and disposal daily of waste bags from cleaner bin emptying
- Liaising and monitoring cleaners scheduling and ensuring that stocks are ordered and maintained at a correct level
- Daily site & grounds check to ensure any health and safety hazards to pupils and visitors are fixed/cordoned off, e.g. pot holes, broken electrical sockets, loose ceiling tiles etc.
- General site maintenance repairs e.g. fixing chairs, replacing light bulbs affixing items to walls etc.
- Unblocking toilets.
- Cleaning of sick.
- Basic groundskeeping – including emptying of external waste bins, path/playground sweeping and gritting
- Key holding and ensuring site security.
- Attending emergency call outs (with ad-hoc cost per call out)
The caretaker will also be required to carry out some DIY tasks within the school, there has been set times allocated to this, the caretaker must be able to prioritise these tasks and be prepared to be flexible to enable the tasks always to be finished when started. This may necessitate the hours being re-apportioned to allow this, but in turn some of the tasks listed above may be seasonally affected and such a degree of time management will be necessary to enable this role to be completed successfully.
