As a Design Apprentice, you’ll produce designs and drawings for numerous mechanical systems and components for use in a variety of industrial and commercial settings.
Take the first step towards building your engineering career while gaining hands-on experience and getting paid as you work towards your qualifications.
At the start of your apprenticeship, you’ll spend the first 30 weeks at TDR Training School in Longbenton. You’ll then join the team at Michell Bearings, South Shields, where you’ll spend four days per week with the design team while attending college one day per week.
Specialising in mechanical engineering, you’ll build a portfolio of evidence throughout your apprenticeship to work towards a Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering.
The company
British Engines Group Company, Michell Bearings, designs and manufactures hydrodynamic bearings for the marine, defence and industrial sectors.
Michell Bearings revolutionised ship building and sea transportation with the invention of the tilting pad bearing over 100 years ago and operates from sites in South Shields (UK), and Bangalore (India), with offices in the USA and Germany.

Who we’re looking for
To apply, you must have achieved GCSE’s in English and Maths (A*-C/ 9-5) and have a genuine desire to learn and develop.
We’re looking for someone who has effective time management, communication and problem solving skills. You’ll need to be confident working with numbers, organised, able to meet deadlines and comfortable working under pressure.
Relevant work experience in an engineering environment would be great, but is not essential. As long as you have a keen interest in engineering, enjoy design and like being part of a team, you’ll be a great fit!
