Job Description
You will support the provision of both inpatient and outpatient diabetes and endocrinology care and the development and implementation of the integrated diabetes pathway with our Community partners and CCGs.
You will be one of three consultants and eight within the speciality, with team also comprising of Diabetes and Endocrine Specialist Nurses supporting the inpatient and outpatient service and links with a community nursing service with an expanding pump therapy service. There is collaborative working with obstetrics and Paediatrics by the way of joint diabetes antenatal and a transitional young adult clinic s to aid smooth transition to adult care. There is also a highly developed multidisciplinary foot care team that supervise the care of patients with diabetic foot complications. The successful applicant will be joining a highly motivated integrated group of diabetes care providers and will be expected to be an active contributor to the team.
The Endocrine service is highly developed in the management of all aspects glandular pathology and is a recognised centre for the sub-speciality of thyroidology with an active monthly thyroid MDT that deals with both benign and malignant thyroid pathology. There is a good link with the combined pituitary MDT at Kings College hospital, London with regular interaction with the neurosurgical and endocrine teams there.
The department is well supported by a team of research nurses enabling the expansion of the research portfolio should the applicant wish to be involved in clinical trials. Involvement in the training of medical students from Guys, Kings and St Thomas medical schools in addition to post graduate supervision will be an integral part of the post. These will ensure that there is ample opportunity for the applicant to develop the academic aspect of the post should this be a keen interest.

- A £10,000 recruitment premium will be paid on commencement and £10,000 after 12 months’ service. To be repaid (pro rata %) if you leave within 12 months of either payment.
The successful candidate will be expected to support diabetes and endocrinology services at William Harvey Hospital. The appointee will work in collaboration with the other D+E physicians in the Trust to share facilities and provide continuity and high standards of care. Clinics will be held at William Harvey Hospital, Royal Victoria Hospital Folkestone, and Buckland Hospital, Dover. Integrated Diabetes Care has been adopted in East Kent. The duties of this post will therefore include supporting primary care to manage the large majority of diabetic patients not requiring specialist care.
The appointee will be expected to participate in the acute general medicine take currently 1 in 8 and to provide a high level of consultant input to the acute take, including AMU rounds in the afternoon, evening and post-take period.
