Purpose of Role

To work as part of the McLaren Automotive Production team producing road cars and controlling the activities of a group of Team Leaders.

The role of the Group Leader is to co-ordinate the day to day activities of a multi-functional team, reporting into the Production Manager.

The role is also responsible for the control of holiday and absence management, Health & Safety, cost & quality control as well as productivity improvement, via your responsible Team Leaders and production resource.

Maintaining the running of the department within budget. To drive shop floor problem solving and escalation processes.


Principal Accountabilities

  • Achieving the daily/annual volume throughput.
  • Keep the assembly line flowing continually, at the correct cycle duration.
  • Contributing to achieving a Quality score of sub 1 defect per car at EOA gateway.
  • Group Leaders will be required to control all Health & Safety requirements for persons and equipment within their work stations, including management of training by ‘training the trainer’, maintenance, and implementation of products.
  • Contributing to the maintenance, upkeep and reporting of the Business Development Plans (BDP’s) in your area.
  • Monitoring & reporting against consumable expenditure, driving down reduction.
  • Control and reporting against scrap costs, driving down reduction. (NCP)
  • Execution of methodologies for Lean Manufacturing, such as 5S, 7 wastes and continuous improvement, always striving for perfection.
  • Understand & demonstrate a broad knowledge of the build process to provide training & assist when issues arise.
  • Provide cover for absence within your team and have a flexible approach to working hours as the business demands.
  • Authorise absence, overtime, weekly working hours.
  • Train & mentor Team Leaders and Team Members to achieve high quality in working practices and processes.
  • Assist in the continuous improvement of production & business processes, i.e. quality, safety, cost, productivity.
  • Maintain Team Member versatility charts and ensure cross training & skills development.
  • Prepare for production by checking resource, equipment, tools, parts availability, consumables etc on a daily basis.
  • Produce maintenance schedules, monitor up time of machinery and ensure daily checks are conducted.
  • Take part in problem solving activities – assist in analysis & resolution of problems, define & determine appropriate actions.
  • Ensure safe working practices are adhered to and that all Team Members are using the correct protective clothing.
  • Track all near misses and accidents to solve any unsafe procedures. Report as required.
  • Ensure correct usage of tooling and equipment.
  • When required conduct performance reviews for areas of your team who require improvement, considering training, regular reviews etc.
  • Support the production manager on timely delivery of department and business targets.
  • Support the urgent containment response to issues found in warranty and MPA (McLaren Product Audit) and plant quality responses to critical line stop / stop shipment topics.
  • Support, drive and participate in practical problem-solving activities.
  • Conduct disciplinary investigations and attends the subsequent meetings within the support of HR.
  • Raises orders with tooling and maintains, monitors lineside tooling.
  • Controls manpower through the area, Raises HRRs for leavers and carries out interviews for recruitment to ensure headcount is fully maintained.
  • Manages training and development of team leaders and ensures performance appraisals are completed x2 per year.
  • Stands in for the production manager when required.
  • Maintain Crew sheet, training matrix to ensure maximum capability of cover.
  • Maintain and endorse McLaren values and culture (housekeeping, appearance etc).
  • Lead by example, influence all team members and ensure they are fully motivated.
  • Excellent communication skills.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Experience in a leadership role.
  • No formal qualifications are necessary, however a foundation in engineering, would be preferred.
  • Understanding and experience in a manufacturing/process driven environment ideal.
  • For some positions, specific skills may be required e.g. composite lay-up & reparation, vehicle repair etc.
  • Be able to demonstrate broad job knowledge of automotive processes and specific skills for the area in question.
  • Quality focused.
  • Good level of knowledge for Microsoft Office packages.
  • Good people management skills.
  • Good presentation skills.
  • Good understanding of Q, C, D, M, S & E.
  • Experience in problem solving.
