Job Description

We have a job vacancy for Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (non-teaching post).

Reporting directly to the Designated Safeguarding Lead, this is a full time, non-teaching role. The key role of the Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DDSL) is to deputise for the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) and Senior Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (SDDSL) in taking responsibility for safeguarding across the College. The roll will be lined managed by the Senior Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead.

Job description

Duties of role will include:
Management of referrals

The DDSL is expected to, under the direction of the DSL/ SDDSL, or in their absence:

Refer cases of suspected abuse to the local authority children’s social care as required and support staff who make referrals to the local authority children’s social care.

Refer cases to the Channel programme where there is a radicalisation concern as required and support staff who make referrals to the Channel programme.

Refer cases where a crime may have been committed to the Police as required.

Manage and track a systematic overview of concerns about students in the College, determining jointly with the DSL when to escalate or de-escalate thresholds of support.

Working with others

To support the DSL/ SDDSL to provide regular updates and information to the Executive Team and Extended Pastoral Team (Heads of Year, SENCO, Thrive Team, Personal Tutors).

To attend the scheduled College safeguarding meetings, including the DSL/DDSL meeting and Pastoral team meeting.

As required, liaise with relevant Social Workers, Multi Agency Team members and other relevant outside agencies who are working with the College’s students and their families.

Liaise with staff on matters of safety and safeguarding and when deciding whether to make a referral by liaising with relevant agencies.

Act as a source of support, advice, and expertise for staff, including coordinating relevant training for the staff body.

Coordinate and attend relevant professional meetings within and outside the College, including Team Around the Child and Team Around the Family meetings where appropriate

Undertaking training

The DDSL should undergo training to provide them with the knowledge and skills required to carry out the role. This training is at the equivalent level and standard as the DSL and should be updated at least every two years.

The DDSL should undertake Prevent awareness training.

In addition to the formal training set out above, their knowledge and skills should be refreshed (this might be via e-bulletins, meeting other DSL/SDDSL, or simply taking time to read and digest safeguarding developments) at regular intervals, as required, but at least annually, to allow them to understand and keep up with any developments relevant to their role so they are able to, alongside or under instruction from the DSL:

Understand the assessment process for providing early help and intervention, for example through locally agreed common and shared assessment processes such as early help assessments.

Have a working knowledge of how local authorities conduct a child protection case conference and a child protection review conference and can attend and contribute to these effectively when required to do so.

Ensure each member of staff has access to and understands the College’s Safeguarding Policy and procedures, especially new and part time staff.

Be alert to the specific needs of groups of students, including but not exclusively, children in need, those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), those Looked After and those recently adopted from Local Authority care and young carers.

Be able to keep detailed, accurate, secure written records of concerns and referrals.

Understand and support the school with regards to the requirements of the Prevent duty and be able to provide advice and support to staff on protecting young people from the risk of radicalisation.

Obtain access to resources and attend any relevant or refresher training courses

Encourage a culture of listening to young people and taking account of their wishes and feelings, among all staff, in any measures the college may put in place to protect them.

Raise Awareness

Support the delivery of annual training to all staff and provide relevant and timely updates within each academic year.

Support the DSL/ SDDSL in ensuring that the College’s Safeguarding Policy is known, understood and used appropriately.

Work jointly to review the College’s Safeguarding Policy annually (as a minimum) and the procedures and implementation are updated and reviewed regularly.

Ensure the College’s Safeguarding Policy is available publicly and parents are aware of the fact that referrals about suspected abuse or neglect may be made and the role of the school in this.

Link with the Local Safeguarding Children’s Board to make sure staff are aware of training opportunities and the latest local policies on safeguarding.

Deliver gatherings to students on relevant safeguarding matters.

To coordinate outside agencies in the delivery of relevant safeguarding, raising awareness programmes within the College.

Record Keeping and Child Protection File

The DDSL will ensure records are kept with good principles;

Clear, comprehensive summary of the concern or action in relation to a concern

Timely action in relation to safeguarding concerns

Clarity over actions taken and decisions reached, including rationale and reference to any joint decision making/discussion

Secure and discreet holding of this information, sharing only where necessary to safeguard the student

Where students leave the College, ensure their child protection file is transferred to the new school as soon as possible, within 5 days. This should be transferred separately from the main pupil file, ensuring secure transit and confirmation of receipt should be obtained. Support the DSL/ SDDSL in sharing information verbally in advance where required

Availability

During term time, DDSL should be available during their working hours and if asked to act in place of the DSL/ SDDSL. If agreed in advance and approved by the DSL, the Senior DDSL can be available remotely in exceptional circumstances. The DDSL will be expected to provide adequate cover arrangements for the out of hours and out of term time safeguarding cover.

All staff have a responsibility to ensure that the College’s Safeguarding Policy is adhered to and concerns are raised in accordance with the policy.

Any other appropriate duties and responsibilities relevant to the post as directed by the Chief Executive Officer, Principal, Vice Principals, or Assistant Principals.
